United States

‍ The Director of National Intelligence, Jay Clayton, will be given an additional role focused on the development of the Trump administration’s AI policies and regulations. The Trump administration has come under increasing pressure to build a safety standard for the industry. However, President Trump has remained skeptical that such regulations are necessary, as they could result in a slowdown in AI development. This would be a problem, as the U.S. remains locked in an AI development race with China.

Asia

Many of China’s state owned oil conglomerates have decided to slow down oil product exports to many nations, which threatens to disrupt global energy markets. Exports to nations close to China, such as Cambodia, will continue; however, export permits to other markets have been suspended. It remains unclear how long the suspension will continue. Reasons for the suspension include greater demand for diesel as the autumn harvest season is in full swing. This move by the Chinese government is not unprecedented, as it took similar action when the Iran war started.

Europe

On Thursday, President Zelensky of Ukraine announced that Ukraine had, for the first time, fired a domestically built ballistic missile. The Ballistic missile has been an important tool for Russia in targeting Ukraine, so, for Ukraine, having the ability to use this potent weapon against Russia will be extremely significant. An even more powerful and far-reaching version of the missile is in development and should be ready toward the end of the year. Ukraine believes that missile could significantly alter the course of the conflict by striking important military targets inside of Russia.

Americas

On Friday, the U.S. Coast Guard announced it had intercepted a vessel that was carrying oil and heading for Cuba. The ship was in violation of the U.S. energy blockade targeting the Cuban government. This fuel blockade on the island nation had significantly damaged its economy and led to significant suffering among its population. Additionally, the lack of fuel has led to widespread blackouts across the country in a bid to conserve the fuel it has left. At the United Nations General Assembly, the Cuban foreign minister said the blockade was “an act of war.”

Africa

Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo was killed in a helicopter crash as he was flying back from his rural home to Zimbabwe's capital, Harare. Chivayo was widely believed to have gained fortune through corrupt practices. He made his large fortune through government contracts, which many were suspicious of. He continuously denied any wrongdoing. The President of Kenya, William Ruto, expressed his condolences online, saying he was a dear friend.

Middle East

Following the attempted hijacking of a FlyDubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, Israel, by the co-pilot and the suspension of further flights between the two nations, two Israeli airlines have been granted permission to fly two flights to Dubai to repatriate Israeli citizens who wish to return home. In addition, El Al, Israel’s flag carrier, was supposed to operate a flight to Dubai on Friday; however, just before takeoff, its landing slot in Dubai was revoked for unknown reasons. The airline was working to resolve the issue, allowing it to operate a one off flight.
