United States

The new White House press secretary, Katie Zacharia, who stepped into the role early last week, was ousted on Friday. The press widely criticized Zacharia’s first press briefing on Tuesday for taking only three questions and seeming unprepared. She also came under heavy criticism for referring to herself as a lawyer even though she failed to pass the bar exam. On Friday, when President Trump was interviewed by the media, he said he told Zacharia to “reconsider” her position.

Asia

Following the detention of a Japanese journalist in Russia, the Japanese foreign ministry summoned the Russian ambassador over the matter. The Japanese journalist Yuki Imai was detained by Russian authorities over accusations of collecting intelligence on the Russian military. The Japanese government requested that Russia provide “humane, fair, and impartial” treatment toward the Japanese citizen. The Reporters Without Borders press advocacy group called on Russia to release Imai immediately.

Europe

Ukraine has come under increased pressure as Russia has ramped up strikes throughout the country and U.S. support appears to be waning. On Wednesday, Russia launched ballistic missiles throughout Ukraine, targeting civilian and energy infrastructure. As a result of the strikes, over 600,000 people lost power in Kyiv, Ukraine. The Ukrainian energy infrastructure appears to be close to a breaking point at a time when the civilian population needs it more than ever. It is widely understood that Russia will continue targeting the energy infrastructure in an attempt to make life extremely difficult for civilians throughout the cold winter ahead.

Americas

16 people were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard from the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Mexico on Friday. The Coast guard was sent out to the site after a distress call from a vessel saying it was taking on water. All of the people who were rescued were taken to hospital for checks after being in the water for an extended period of time. The Mexican Navy said it did not participate in the rescue because the incident took place in U.S. waters. It remains unclear as to where the boat was heading at the time it capsized.

Africa

After its first Ebola infection was confirmed last week, Kenya reported a second Ebola case this week, which has raised concerns throughout the African nation.  The second man to contract Ebola was closely related to the person who first contracted Ebola. The second man was already in isolation before he tested positive, according to officials. Kenyan health and government officials continue to maintain that the situation remains under control and the risk to the general public remains low. The chance that anyone else will be infected as a result of the second case is low, as the individual was immedietely put into isolation following the first infection.

Middle East

The Iranian proxy and terrorist group, the Houthis, launched air strikes on the internationally recognized Yemeni government, resulting in the deaths of five people. Additionally, 16 other people were injured in the Houthi attack on Maashiq Palace in Aden. The country’s prime minister was not reported to be injured from the strikes, according to Yemen’s information minister. Aden has been home to the nation's government after the Houthis pushed them from the country’s capital, Sanaa, in 2015. After this attack on the palace, the Houthis announced another attack targeting the oil-rich city of Marib.
