The Weekly Report: February 8-15 2026

United States

U.S. troops have departed a small military base in Syria which has been home to numerous U.S. troops for over ten years. The troops have been stationed at the Al-Tanf Garrison to fight ISIS. The troops will now relocate to a military base just over the border in Jordan. This departure means that roughly 1000 troops are left at different outposts in Syria.

Asia

Japanese authorities said that they seized a fishing boat and detain its captain that was sailing off of the coast of Nagasaki. Moreover the Japanese Fishers Agency said that it had ordered the boat to stop for inspection following the boat entering Japans economic zone in the East China Sea. Instead of stopping the boat fled which prompted the authorities to detain the crew and seize the vessel.

Europe

President Zelensky of Ukraine said that his country would not hold elections until a ceasefire with Russia is in place. President Zelensky’s term was supposed to be up in 2024 however due do martial law elections could not take place. In recent months Zelensky has been under increasing pressure from President Trump to hold elections in Ukraine.

Americas

The United Nations (UN) human rights chief Volker Türk requested that the U.S. lift sanctions that specifically target the deliver of oil to the island nation. The loss of oil imports from Venezuela, following to capture of Maduro, has further crippled the Cuban economy.

Africa

U.S. military personnel has arrived in Nigeria in order to assist Nigerias military in counterterrorism operations. The U.S. troops will not be involved in operation themselves but rather will be focused purely on supporting Nigerian forces.

Middle East

Prince William travelled to Saudi Arabia this past week with the goal of the trip being to strengthen relations between the Arab nation and the U.K. Specifically the British government reportedly requested that Prince William make the trip. During the trip he met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman.
