The Weekly Report: April 19-26 2026

United States

The U.S. Navy captured the Iranian-flagged container ship Touska. This capture marked the first of dorect seizure of a vessel since the U.S. Navy announced a blockade on all Iranian ships exiting the Strait of Hormuz. This seizure comes as U.S. and Iran peace talks have seemingly stalled. The blockage of the Strait of Hormuz is meant to apply pressure on the Iranian regime to negotiate.

Asia

U.S. and Iranian negotiators were supposed to meet in Pakistan for a second round of talks this week however it was cancelled. The Iranian side has said the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports violated the ceasefire agreement between the two nations. It seems, however, that a second round of negotations between the two countries will take place in the near future.

Europe

The European Union (EU) announced that it approved a 106 billion dollar loan package for Ukraine. The loan is meant to help Ukraine economically and militarily. On the other hand, the EU announced a new round of sanctions targeting over 40 ships that are suspected to be apart of the Russian shadow fleet.

Americas

In peru, the presidential elections will head to a runoff after after no candidate secured the necessary 50 percent threshold in the first round of elections on April 12. The Far-right candidate, Keiko Fujimori led the first round, taking home 17 percent of the vote. The election was plauged by logistical failures that prohibited 63,000 people from voting due to a lack of enough ballots.

Africa

A United Nations report released this week, showed that a Libyan armed group has been providing fuel, arms, and foreign fighters to Sudans paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. This report comes as Sudans war enters its fourth year. The war has seen over 59,000 people killed and a humanitarian crisis ravage the African nation.

Middle East

President Trump announced a three week extension to the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon following talks at the White House. Hezbollah said the extension was meaningless. The ceasfire in Lebanon is tied directly to broader U.S. peace talks with Iran, as Iran has said a ceasefire must remain in place in Lebanon for talks between the U.S. and Iran continue.
