China arrested a U.S. citizen and accused him of endangering Chinese national security. According to the spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, U Min Zin was arrested for “engaging in espionage activities that endanger China’s national security.” U Min Zin has participated in graduate studies at U.C. Berkley and has led a research group on Myanmar that studies the nation's politics. U.S. diplomats are reportedly aware of the arrest of an American citizen.
Asia
Roughly 13 civilians were killed in eastern Afghanistan this week from Pakistani air strikes, according to the United Nations. The Pakistani Foreign Ministry’s spokesman said the strikes were targeting militants. The spokesman further added that the strikes were “precise and targeted.” Afghanistan and Pakistan have been attacking each other sporadically since February, when Pakistan declared “open war” against its neighbor.
Europe
Officials from the U.S. have outlined their plans to reduce the number of U.S military aircraft available for NATO operations. The Department of Defense has not said the specific number of aircraft that will be withdrawn but stated, more broadly, its intention to reduce U.S. military presence in Europe. This action comes as the U.S., under the Trump administration, has said on numerous occasions it will reduce its military support for Europe.

President Trump has indicated he may withdraw the U.S. from the Canada-Mexico trade deal. When he was asked by a reporter if he would renew the free-trade deal, he said: “I don’t know that I’m going to renew it.” President Trump has made it clear on numerous occasions that he believes neither Canada nor Mexico have anything that the U.S. is in need of.
Africa
On Tuesday night, 12 people were killed in an attack in Johannesburg after 10 gunmen stormed a settlement. Investigators have already started a manhunt to locate and apprehend the offenders and to determine a motive for the attack. One local resident said he believed the attack was connected with a dispute between illegal miners. Some of the miners who were frustrated with the situation reportedly left the community and had tried to return and cause harm to the small settlement.
Middle East
A “memorandum of understanding” between the U.S. and Iran is under discussion as President Trump has indicated a deal between the two nations could be signed this weekend. Details of the deal that have been circulating on social media are reportedly incorrect, according to president Trump. He said the details that Iran leaked to the media are not in line with the ones agreed upon in writing.
