The Weekly Report: June 28-July 5 2026

United States

 It was reported this past week that U.S. officials believed that Israel may have been planning to kill Iran’s negotiators during peace talks between the U.S. and Iran. Specifically, the two lead negotiators for the Iranian Delegation, Abbas Araghchi and Mohammed Bagher Ghalibaf, were the ones supposedly being targeted by Israel. Fearful of the potential that Israel would seek to eliminate the officials, the U.S., according to some officials, went as far as to ask countries to warn Iran about possible assassination attempts on the two officials.

Asia

Recently, China has begun to increase pressure on Japan in different capacities. China added Japanese companies to a list of companies not permitted to receive Chinese exports. Russia and China also flew warplanes near southwest Japan. This campaign of pressure began in November when Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said Japan would assist Taiwan in its defense in the event of a Chinese invasion.  

Europe

Battlefield progress and threats of capture of land outside Donbas were echoed, in a rare visit to the frontlines, by President Putin of Russia. The visit appears to be timed to reassure the Russian  public that an increase in Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory will not cause Russia to deviate from its goals in the war. President Putin’s visit came only two days following a strike on Kyiv of the utmost intensity, which resulted in the deaths of roughly 30 people.

Americas

Four people were killed in a World Cup celebration in Mexico following the nation’s win over Ecuador, according to local authorities. They were reportedly killed by asphyxiation as streets in Mexico City filled with thousands of people. Resuscitation was attempted on one of the victims, but was unsuccessful, and the victim was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Africa

For the small island nation of Cape Verde off the west coast of Africa, Friday’s performance against Argentina was still treated as a victory in many respects. As a nation of roughly 500,000 people, many of the island’s citizens are very proud of their nation's accomplishment on the biggest stage of soccer.

Middle East

In Damascus, Syria, a bomb exploded at a cafe, which resulted in the deaths of six people. The blast, which occurred near the main courthouse in Damascus, was caused by an explosive device however, a perpetrator has not been identified. This attack is the latest in a string of similar attacks that have taken place across the country since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for many of those past attacks.
