United States
The U.S. military launched renewed air strikes on Iran on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Pentagon said over 170 military targets were successfully hit in this latest round of strikes. The targets included air defense systems, drone and missile storage facilities, and military speedboats along the Iranian coast. On Friday President Trump said that negotiations would continue but “the Cease Fire is OVER.”
Asia
In a move that has raised concerns about free speech, South Korea passed an amendment to its communications act that will increase the financial penalties for spreading false information online. As part of the amendment, any content creator with over 100,000 views monthly or 100,000 thousand subscribers or more will be punished financially for spreading false information. Moreover they the content creator would be given a fine five times the damages caused to the victim.
Europe
On a Malta Air flight, a subsidiary of Ryanair, a passenger was partially pulled out of a window after the plane took off from Thessaloniki, Greece. It took the efforts of many passengers to pull the man fully back into the aircraft. After the plane returned to the airport, the man was sent to the hospital for his injuries, which are non life threatening. Ryanair said in a statement they were aware of the situation and that all passengers returned safely back to the airport.
Americas
A bridge connecting Detroit, Michigan to Windsor, Ontario is set to open on July 27 after months of back and forth between the U.S government and Canadian government over how profit from tolls would be shared between the two nations. In February President Trump said in a social media post that he would block the opening of the bridge. The opening of the bridge is an announcement that will be welcomed by many as over 300 million dollars worth of trade travels between the two cities.
Africa
Egyptian fans were heartbroken after their country lost to Argentina in the World Cup round of 16. Many of the Egyptian fans were not happy with the referee after a goal in the 58th minute was out ruled. Many fans felt the refereeing was not impartial and that Argentina was begin favored. The teams coach said “there was clear discrimination against us, and clear corruption in front of everyone’s eyes.”
Middle East
The Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Oman for discussions over the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. Even thought Iran and the U.S. signed a ceasefire agreement last month, flare ups in fighting have continued with the latest one taking place this week. The Iranian military has fired on commercial ships traveling on routes they say are not acceptable. Some people think these bouts of fighting between the two nations and the rhetoric coming from both sides is all apart of the negotiation process.
