United States
Director of the CIA John Ratcliffe made a visit to Moscow, Russia, this week to meet with his counterpart Aleksandr V. Bortnikov. The purpose of the meeting was for Director Ratcliffe to share his assessment of Russia’s dismal war in Ukraine. Maintaining lines of communication between the CIA and Russia’s intelligence services is normal practice and has been going on for a long time. After the meeting, it was reported that President Putin of Russia was briefed on the outcomes of the meeting.
Asia
Following the deadly floods in Nepal, rescue workers have continued to search for the missing, of whom there are 2400. Thus far, it’s been confirmed that at least 675 people were killed in the floods, while that number is expected to rise. Rescue teams faced difficulty on Saturday as they attempted to rescue workers who were trapped in hydropower tunnels. Nepali thermal military drones, as of Saturday, had not detected any signs of life in the tunnels. It is believed that 900 workers remain trapped in the tunnels.
Europe
For his first foreign trip since taking office, Prime Minister Andy Burnham of the United Kingdom visited Kyiv, Ukraine, to reaffirm his country’s support for the nations at war with Russia. Over recent weeks, threats from Russia towards the UK have increased. Russia warned the UK that it would have to respond to the use of British-made drones in attacks on Russian territory. What that response would look like remains unclear. Additionally, Russia recalled its ambassador to the UK due to a deterioration in relations between the two nations.
Americas
President Trump announced on Friday a plan that would see the U.S. take over control of most of Venezuela’s oil reserves. Since President Trump captured the former President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, not much has changed in the South American nation. Maduro’s former Vice president is now in charge, and the poverty situation in the nation remains largely the same. While this latest move by the U.S. could bring major investment into the country, many Venezuelans are reported to want real political and economic change.
Africa
A group of soldiers from the Niger attacked the presidential palace and other important governmental sites in the nation. The defense ministry said it was not clear what the aims of the attacks were by a small faction of the military; however, they appeared to be rebellious. These attacks have frightened the military junta, which seized power from the country’s previous democratically elected president in 2023. Limited information has been released regarding the attacks. It also remains unclear how many people were killed.
Middle East
Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Al Thani of Qatar travelled to Iran this week for talks with senior Iranian governmental officials over the ongoing war between the U.S. and Iran. The Qatari foreign ministry said the talks were aimed at ensuring that freedom of navigation continues in the Strait of Hormuz. The visit comes at a time when Iran has accused Qatar of keeping three Iranian pilots who were shot down at the beginning of the war captive.
