United States
The U.S. military blew up another boat suspected of carrying illegal drugs in the eastern Pacific Ocean. The strike was authorized by the newly appointed Southcom commander, General Francis Donovan. This latest strike reportedly resulted in the killing of two people who were on board.
Asia
China overturned the death sentence of a Canadian who as convicted on drug charges. Robert Schellenburg, the Canadian in question, was initially sentenced to 15 years in prison however after a retrial in 2019 he was sentenced to death. This move follows a meeting between President Xi of China and Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada a few weeks ago.
Europe
The last nuclear arms treaty between the U.S. and Russia expired on Thursday. The expiration means that there are no limits currently on how many nuclear weapons Russia and the U.S. can possess. President Trump has said that he is ready to negotiate a better agreement than the one that was previously established. In a new treaty, President Trump suggested that other nuclear powers should also be apart of it.
Americas
The United States and Argentina signed a trade agreement, which will see a reduction in reciprocal tariffs and an expansion of exports for Argentina. This is the first time that the two countries have signed an expansive trade agreement of this nature. As part of the deal the Untied states will eliminate its reciprocal tariffs it placed on numerous Argentinian exports.
Africa
Seif al-Islam el-Qaddafi, son of former dictator of Libya Muammar el-Qaddafi, was killed when four armed men stormed his house in Libya. It remains unclear as to who killed him as the security cameras at his house were disabled prior to the attack. The death is being treated as an assassination according to Abdullah Othman, a political advisor to el-Qaddafi.
Middle East
The United States and Iran held talks in Oman for the first time since the U.S. bombed Irans nuclear sites in June. According to Iranian officials the talks were “positive” while President Trump said the talks were “very good”. President has continued to state however that if a deal isn’t reached Iran could face huge consequences.
