United States
Former Attorney General Pam Bondi delivered remarks on how she handled the release of the Epstein files during a closed-door interview with the House Oversight Committee. Bondi reportedly told members of the committee that Todd Blanche, her former deputy and now successor, was dealing with the entire Epstein investigation. Bondi also added that Blanche was the person responsible for deciding which documents would be released to the public.
Asia
In response to the Chinese government’s expulsion of a New York Times (NYT) journalist from China, the U.S. has ordered a Chinese journalist to leave the United States. The NYT journalist Vivian Wang was reportedly expelled in response to the appearance of the Taiwanese president at a NYT DealBook event in December. Wang, however, played no role in the event. The Chinese government has reportedly been frustrated with the reporting by Wang. This is the latest move by the Chinese government to suppress speech.
Europe
Romanian authorities reported that a Russian drone hit an apartment building in the city of Galati, which resulted in the injuries of two individuals. It remains unclear as to whether or not the attack was deliberate or accidental. NATO and Romania have launched an investigation into the crashed drone, with one official saying it’s likely either reckless behavior by the Russian military or jamming that pushed the drone off course.
Americas
Speaking on Thursday, Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada said that his nation's recent moves to reduce its dependency on the U.S. would benefit Americans. Specifically, Prime Minister Carney said, “a stronger Canada is a better ally.” Carney also noted that it’s necessary to eliminate tariffs on autos. This is the latest speech by Carney, who also gave a speech at the Davos World Economic Forum, which attracted attention from around the world.
Africa
A court in Kenya suspended a move by the U.S., which would have seen the establishment of a quarantine facility to house suspected American Ebola patients. The facility was going to be set up at a military airbase in Laikipia, which is roughly 100 miles north of the capital city of Nairobi. Moreover, it was expected the facility would have been operational on Friday; however, when and if that facility will be opened remains uncertain.
Middle East
Israeli troops have continued their push into southern Lebanon while cease-fire talks continue. On Friday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel said the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have faced continued attacks by Hezbollah as they move deeper into Lebanon. Evacuation orders were also issued on Friday by the Israeli government, as air strikes continued.
