United States
In a social media post on Thursday, President Trump announced that the Board of Peace agreed on a disarmament plan with Hamas. Moreover, a “detailed road map” on the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and Hamas disarmament has been established. President Trump also said the plan is “a critical step towards Gaza finally being governed by a new Palestinian government that will work closely with the Board of Peace to help the Palestinian people.”
Asia
In a show of growing ties between the U.S. and Vietnam, a U.S. aircraft carrier began a seven-day stay at a port in Vietnam. For the U.S., Vietnam is strategically important as it is next to China and offers the U.S. a chance to project strength close to China’s borders. Vietnam remains careful with regard to how it projects the closeness of its relationship with the U.S. Vietnam has been a country that has maintained a policy of maintaining relationships with a wide variety of nations.
Europe
A Russian missile landed in Polish territory on Thursday as part of an assault on Ukrainian territory. This latest incident is another example of a Russian air incursion into a NATO country. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said, “This incident is yet another reckless act by Russia and a dangerous consequence of its war against Ukraine.” The missile strike caused no injuries or deaths as it crashed into an open field. Prime Minister Donal Tusk of Poland said their wasnt evidence that the missile was purposefully targeting Poland.
Americas
In Canada’s latest move away from U.S. dependency, it announced a new deal to export liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Europe. This deal came only a week after President Trump announced the implementation of new tariffs set to go into effect in August. This deal is significant as, previously, almost all of Canada’s LNG was exported to the U.S. Now, however, in a major shift, Canada will export 55 percent of its LNG to countries other than the U.S.
Africa
Thousands of migrants crossed from Morocco into the Spanish controlled enclave of Ceuta over recent days. The city of Ceuta has been controlled by Spain for centuries and has often been a source of tension between with Morocco over migration. According to the local government in Ceuta, most of the people had left and travelled back to Morocco. This latest border rush was different from past incidents due to the number of people. As a result, Spain activated its military in an attempt to ensure adequate control after the surge.
Middle East
The Iranian military announced that it has launched a drone attack on U.S. forces stationed in Kuwait on Friday. Following the attack, the Kuwaiti military announced it had successfully shot down the drones. Iran said the attacks were a response to U.S. attacks that have taken place in recent days. This strike is the latest tit-for-tat between the U.S. and Iran as a peace deal still looks a way away.
