The Weekly Report: January 4-11 2026
United States
The FBI ( Federal Bureau of Investigation) confirmed that Christopher Raia, a career FBI agent, will take the place of Deputy Director from Dan Bongino who is resigning the post. This appointment is in line with the type of person who has held the post in the past, that being a career officer. Dan Bongino’s appointment last year was not in line with the traditional profile of FBI Deputy Director.
Asia
Cambodia announced that it extradited Chen Zhi to China in response to a request by the Chinese Government. Chen Zhi was naturalized as a citizen in 2014 after he moved from China. Zhi is accused of running a massive cyber scam operation. This extradition comes as China and Cambodia have been cooperating more and more over recent months.
Europe
The President of France and Prime minister of the United Kingdom both signed a security agreement with Ukraine that would provide Ukraine with security guarantees once the war ends. As part of the agreement the leaders said that both of their nations would deploy troops to Ukraine after the war to dissuade President Putin from engaging in military action with Ukraine again.
Americas
President Trump met with the leaders of oil and gas companies in an attempt to persuade them to invest in Venezuela. Many of the companies are reluctant however with the CEO of Exxon-Mobil saying that to re enter Venezuela after having their assets seized twice before would require security guarantees. The CEO further added that he would possible send a team to Venezuela in the next few weeks to explore the idea of investment as long as the teams security is guaranteed.
Africa
Many people were killed, and others kidnapped in an attack on a church in Nigeria. This was the first attack of its kind since the U.S. Military bombed targets in the country. So far it is not clear how many people were abducted. Additionally no militant group has taken responsibility for the attack.
Middle East
Thousands of people have been protesting in Iran over the past week. The protests have spread to numerous cities in the country including the capital Tehran. A mosque was reportedly set on fire in the capital. In response to the protests, the government has issued an internet blackout and threats that it will begin to crackdown on the protesters.
