The World Today In Ten Bullets

  • Israel launched a strike targeting the Syrian Ministry of Defense in an effort to protect the Druze people, a religious minority, following clashes between the Syrian Military and the Druze fighters in southern Syria. 

  • Russia bombed a shopping center in Dobropillia Ukraine which killed two people. The town is located in Eastern Ukraine in the Donbas region, close to the front line. At the time of the attack the shopping center was reportedly crowded. 

  • Overnight, the senate approved a request from the White House to cancel roughly eight billion dollars in foreign aid funding and one billion dollars in funding for public broadcasting, These proposed cuts are most likely to affect aid organizations which were recipients of the money alongside

  • MAGA supporters and congressmen's  frustration with the handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files continues. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson said he would like more information with regards to the DOJ investigation into Jeffrey Epstein. 

  • The Department of Defense(DOD) announced contracts worth 200 million each were awarded to different AI companies which included OpenAI, Anthropic, Alphabet's Google, and xAI. The DOD said that the purpose of these contracts were to “help with AI workflows that will address critical national security challenges” said Doug Matty, chief of AI at the DOD. 

  • The defacto boss of Samsung, Lee Jae-Yong was cleared of corruption charges following a five year trial. He was accused of accounting fraud along with the manipulation of stocks.

  • At least 20 people were killed Wednesday during a stampede at a Gaza food distribution site according to Palestinian and aid officials. 

  • Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada announced he would move to block Chinese steel from entering Canada to prevent it from overwhelming the market. This move comes after President Trump announced that steel would be subject to a 50 percent tariff.

  • European nations which consist of England, France, and Germany announced they would all move to reimpose United National(UN) sanctions on Iran by the end of August at the latest if there is no progress made on limiting the Iranian nuclear program.

  • Trump discussed the possibility of sacking Jerome Powell, Chair of the Federal Reserve. No Chair of the Federal Reserve has ever been sacked so it would set a completely new precedent should he carry out his threat. Later in the day he walked back his comments with him saying it was “Highly Unlikely” he would fire Jerome Powell.
