United States
After six U.S. service members were killed when an air refueling aircraft crashed in Iraq following an incident with another plane according to U.S. Central Command. These six deaths brings the total U.S. casualties, in the war with Iran, to 13. Further details relating to the incident have not been released by the Department of Defense.
Asia
Pakistans economy has began to struggle even more as oil prices rise due to the conflict between the U.S. and Iran. Pakistan imports roughly 85 percent of its oil from Saudi Arabia which travels through the Strait of Hormuz. This disruption has already been felt by Pakistani farmers as they have said it will be difficult to afford fuel ahead of the harvest season.
Europe
This past week, the United States requested assistance from Ukraine to help counter Iranian drones. Specifically, the U.S. and other Middle Eastern nations have requested “support for their defensive capabilites” said President Zelensky of Ukraine. President Zelensky further added that “those now seeking Ukraine’s help must continue to assist our own defense”.
Americas
Protests broke out in the Cuban city of Moron on Friday. These more violent protests were ignited following peaceful demonstrations. Cubans have begun to grow frustrated as longer blackouts have taken place more often and food distribution has come to a stop. Protests are rare in Cuba as the security services have a tight hold over the population.
Africa
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, three people were killed including an aid worker following a drone strike. No one has claimed responsibility for the drone strike. The strike took place in a city that is under control by M23, a militia that is controlled by Rwanda. Rwanda and the DRC have been in conflict even though a peace deal was signed between the two African nations in December.
Middle East
Many Middle Eastern airlines have been grounded due to the ongoing conflict in the region. Airlines such as Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar Airways have been forced to cancel thousands of flights combined. Many are now wondering how long it will take for these airlines to recover from this major disruption. Many travellers transit through the Middle East which is another reason this was has been felt throughout the travel industry.
