United States
President Trump announced he would place a ten percent tariff on Denmark alongside a group of other European nations in a move to pressure the Danish to sell Greenland to the U.S. Specifically Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Britain, Netherlands, and Finland were the E.U. nations who were targeted due to them supporting Greenlands independence from potential U.S. takeover.
Asia
Prime Minister of Italy Giorgio Meloni and Prime Minister of Japan Sanae Takaichi met in Tokyo on Friday. The topics discussed during the meeting included defense, culture, and trade. This meeting was the first between the two nations since Prime Minister Takaichi took office in Japan in the fall.
Europe
Officials in Kyiv announced that schools would be closed until February due to continuous blackouts due to Russian airstrikes on Ukrainian power plants. Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, has suffered greatly this winter as the city’s power grid has been continuously targeted. In previous winters Ukraine has been able to manage such strikes however this winter is proving to be more difficult.
Americas
Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada travelled to Beijing to hold talks with President Xi Jinping of China. Important announcements from the meeting included a reduction in tariffs on Chinese electric vehicle imports. Also Canadian tourists will be able to travel to China visa free going foward.
Africa
President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda was re-elected as President of Uganda which will extend his four decades of power. Bobi Wine who was the opposition candidate said the election was rigged and called for people to being protesting in the streets. During the campaign President Museveni said that he has brought stability and growth to the African nation.
Middle East
Protests in Iran calmed downs following weeks of demonstrations that resulted in the deaths of thousands. Iranian security services opened fire on many proteststers which resulted in many deaths. It seems that the suppression worked protesters have seemingly left the streets.
